What are Inlays?

Porcelain Inlay Porcelain Onlay Crown

Inlays are more permanent substitutes for fillings to restore a fraction of a decayed or fractured posterior tooth. This technique, which seamlessly delivers a conservative treatment, has also been dubbed as biomimetic dentistry. Inlays were traditionally made out of gold however, with the help of modern advancements in materials and adhesives, they are now constructed in ceramic/porcelain materials and bonded to the tooth resulting in a conservative tooth-colored restoration.

What are Onlays?

Unlike inlays that fit inside the tooth, onlays have an extension onto the cusps(chewing surface) of the tooth. The procedure aims to repair a tooth that has extensive damage stretching undermining the surface stability of the tooth. Advanced technology in our office allows us to scan your mouth to closely duplicate the lost portion of your teeth. Similar to inlays, modern onlays are made of tooth-colored material bonded tp the tooth. This technique is also known as biomimetic restorative dentistry.

Am I a candidate for Inlays or Onlays?

Ideal candidates have extensive damage that cannot be properly resolved with chair-side treatments or experience restoration failure. The lost tooth structure is generally not severe enough to indicate a crown. However some patients have parafunctional habits such as clenching and grinding which can undermine the longevity of these restorations. Schedule a consultation to determine if these conservative treatments are a suitable option for you.
